Theory Lab

Our Innovation Programme

Lotus Theory Lab is our internal innovation programme:
A collaboration between Lotus Creative, Lotus Engineering and key
strategic partners focused on technology, materiality and manufacturing
stories with substance to inform future Lotus products and services.

Theory Lab can also be a powerful think tank for clients looking
for an innovative external view on a product or concept. Contact us to

The work on Theory 1

Lotus Theory 1 is the first public outcome
of our Theory Lab innovation programme.
Key innovations and partners are below.

Responsive Seating

The soft robotic fabric – crafted in collaboration with
MotorSkins – is applied on the seat pads as well.
It inflates in key areas to provide ultimate grip
and support for the driver and the two passengers,
enhancing performance or comfort, adapting to
the selected drive mode.

Bespoke Sonic Experience

Designed together with KEF,
each headrest offers individual bespoke
soundscapes using Binaural Audio
technology for perfect channel
separation through four integrated
speakers. The 3D-printed lattice
structure manufactured by Carbon
ensures maximum comfort and
reduces weight.

A band of technology

LOTUSWEAR™ Technology Line is a functional
technology band running inside and outside the car.
It incorporates cameras, lidar sensors, door handles
and OLED technology in a single system.

It also handles Theory 1’s 360-degree autonomous
driving hardware – with computing powered
by NVIDIA – to provide drivers with confidence
and safety every time they drive. A homage to the
purely functional joining band on the Lotus Esprit.

Laser Lights

Lotus tapped into global electronics manufacturer
Kyocera SLD Laser, Inc., a Kyocera group company,
to deliver industry-leading laser lights in both the interior
and exterior. This delivers a safe, powerful, and
advanced lighting system while drastically reducing
component size and weight. The lights includes ‘Next
Generation’ laser wire DRL functions, which are under
a millimeter in diameter, and main and dipped-beam
functions delivered through lenses of 7x35mm.
